Our History

whtu-seal

From its beginnings, the University has grown steadily, adding specialized schools to meet the needs of working professionals:

  • The Boyer Graduate School of Education (1995), named for Dr. Ernest L. Boyer—former U.S. Commissioner of Education and president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching—whose vision emphasized accessibility, lifelong learning, and the integration of scholarship with real-world service.
  • The W. Edwards Deming School of Business (1987), honoring Dr. W. Edwards Deming—renowned statistician, educator, and management consultant—whose principles of quality, continuous improvement, and leadership remain core to our business programs.
  • The School of Government & Law (2022), expanding our reach into public service leadership and legal studies.

WHTU first earned national accreditation in 2003 from the Distance Education and Training Council (now the Distance Education Accrediting Commission, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education) and gained full authorization in 2007 from the Colorado Commission on Higher Education to operate as a degree-granting institution.

Our founder, David L. Boyd, brought decades of leadership in accreditation and governance. He served twelve years on the Educational Standards Committee of the DEAC, participated in numerous site visits for accrediting bodies and state agencies, and represented distance learning law schools on the California Law School Council. Beyond higher education, he contributed to K-12 governance as a member of the Orange County School Boards Association and completed the California School Boards Association’s Master of Governance program.

The University takes its name from William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States and the only person to also serve as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A Yale graduate and avid baseball player, Taft championed public service, legal excellence, and the pursuit of practical solutions—values that continue to guide our mission.

For more than four decades, William Howard Taft University has provided accessible, dependable education to thousands of students nationwide. Like a favorite place you can always count on, we focus on delivering value, consistency, and results—helping students reach their goals with a clear path and a steady hand. Trusted Education, Bright Futures.

A Message from Our President

Amy Kahn, PhD

As we near our fifth decade of delivering quality distance education, our dedication to maintaining a highly respected institution remains strong. We continue to graduate students who possess practical knowledge and skills directly relevant to employer demands.

It is my honor to serve as the 3rd President of William Howard Taft University.

Our legacy of providing quality distance education spans four decades, and we remain committed to offering a highly respected educational experience that equips our graduates with the knowledge and skills to achieve their life goals. At WHTU, we are here to help you find your story, tell it, and share it with the world.

At WHTU, we value learners of all backgrounds. Our focus is on academic excellence, innovative programs, and respecting the needs of the adult learner. We understand the challenge of balancing education with life's responsibilities, and we are dedicated to supporting you every step of the way.  Our flexible learning environment is designed to meet the needs of high-achieving adults pursuing an undergraduate or graduate program. Our highly qualified faculty members and staff are committed to help you with a rewarding and challenging educational experience.

On a personal note, as President of WHTU, I want to acknowledge that returning to school as an adult is a vulnerable and brave endeavor. I recall the start of my doctoral journey and the awkward feeling of stepping back to the classroom after feeling confident as a professional. I listened as professors spoke about transformation and growth and I wondered exactly what that meant. I now understand. Each of us brings a unique set of life experiences to our educational journey. We each have stories to tell and furthering our education provides us with a broadened set of analytical and tactical skills to enhance our story and open new opportunities to share and be heard.

We are here to help you achieve your dreams.

Sincerely,
Dr. Amy Kahn
