Financial Aid— Making Education Accessible

At William Howard Taft University, we are committed to helping students make their education more affordable. Our financial aid options, including federal loans, grants, and scholarships, are designed to provide access to quality education without financial barriers. Below, you’ll find essential information on eligibility, aid options, and how to apply.

Types of Aid

Students may be eligible for the following types of financial support:

Federal Loans

Available for eligible students enrolled at least half-time, these loans provide financial assistance with flexible repayment options.

External Grants or Scholarships

Need-based and merit-based financial assistance that does not require repayment. These grants are awarded based on financial need and the availability of funds. There are many organizations outside of WHTU offering these options.

Military and Veteran Benefits

Assistance for active-duty service members, veterans, and their dependents, helping them pursue higher education with financial support.

Federal Direct
Loan Programs

William Howard Taft University participates in the Federal Direct Loan Program, providing eligible students with access to low-interest loans to help finance their education. Loan limits, interest rates, and eligibility requirements are set by federal law and may vary based on individual circumstances.

For the most current rates and detailed program information, visit the Federal Student Aid website:

Unsubsidized Loans

Available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students regardless of financial need. Interest accrues during all periods.

PLUS Loans

Credit-based loans available to graduate students or to parents of dependent undergraduate students. These loans help cover educational expenses not met by other financial aid.

Federally Insured Student Loans

Eligibility Requirements

Financial aid is available for those who qualify. An individual must:

  • Enrollment: Be enrolled in an eligible degree program (Directed Study Specifically).
  • Education Level: Not be enrolled in elementary or secondary school; must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Citizenship: Be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen.
  • FAFSA: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.
  • Social Security Number: Have a valid SSN (with limited exceptions).
  • Academic Progress: Maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) as defined by the institution.
  • Financial Integrity: Not be in default on a Title IV loan or owe an overpayment on a Title IV grant.
  • Statement of Educational Purpose: Certify educational purpose and provide required documentation.
  • Other Restrictions: Cannot have fraudulently obtained Title IV funds; must repay any excess loan amounts if applicable.
  • Dependency Status: Determined by FAFSA rules (e.g., age, marital status, military service, dependents, homelessness).

Important Considerations for Loan Eligibility

Program Modality Matters

Students in the Directed Study modality may qualify for Federal Financial Aid, while those in the Independent Study modality are not eligible. However, both modalities may qualify for veterans’ educational benefits, employer tuition assistance, and external grants.

Federal Direct Loans

These low-interest loans are issued by the U.S. Department of Education and offer significant advantages over traditional consumer loans:

  • Repayment is deferred until six months after graduation or withdrawal.
  • Loan approval is not based on credit history, meaning a low FICO score, bankruptcy, or foreclosure will not disqualify a student.
  • Interest rates are set by Congress and are typically lower than conventional loans. Current rates can be found on the U.S. Department of Education’s website.
